Mizuho Bank's internet banking service was intermittently unavailable for about three hours from around 7:00 a.m. on the 31st. The bank confirmed that a large amount of data had been sent from an external source, and is investigating the possibility that it may have been a cyber attack.

At the start of the week on the New York Stock Exchange on December 30th, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by more than $700 at one point as sell orders surged to lock in profits with the year coming to an end. However, there was a subsequent buyback movement, which reduced the extent of the decline, and the closing price was $42,573.73, $418.48 lower than at the end of last week.
